PxBoy: Character Maker
A downloadable tool for Windows
Introducing PxBoy, a unique take on 2D character generators. Currently in its Alpha phase, I encourage you to explore the demo before making a purchase, given the initial library of assets is on the smaller side. The demo offers access to all assets but removes the ability to render.
It's important to see whether PxBoy will run with your specs, as you will need a modern-ish graphics card that supports Vulkan
Adjustable Proportions
Drawing inspiration from character creators in RPGs, PxBoy offers sliders enabling adjustment of size, weight, and head size, with an array of additional options on the horizon. Any alterations will be reflected throughout your character – ensuring that even the most elaborate spikey helmet adapts to varying head sizes.
Mix and Match Parts
With interchangeable parts featuring customizable sub-parts and adjustable parameters, the potential for diverse combinations is boundless.
Adjustable Material Colors and Properties
Fancy a helmet as dull as stone, shoes with a divine shine, or a metallic character reminiscent of Metal Mario? PxBoy offers a spectrum of possibilities. For the tech-savvy, models incorporate the PBR material properties packaged with Godot, the engine fueling PxBoy. This integration enables characters to capitalize on the lighting engine, offering access to color, roughness, metallic, and emissions properties for each segment.
Camera and Rendering Options
Catering to diverse game styles, be it top-down or side-scrolling, PxBoy comes equipped with camera presets tailored to your needs. Not a fan of the default dithering or outline? We have sliders for those. Prefer using your custom indexed palette or one from LOSPEC? That’s covered too.
Cleaning Up
Beneath the pixel art shader lie 3D polygonal models and shaders rendering 3D geometry (Signed Distance Fields). Given the targeted low resolution, PxBoy may exhibit minor artifacts like stray or missing pixels, depending on the rendering angle. While most users find this a reasonable compromise for such flexibility, some might need to apply manual corrections. Nevertheless, character creation with PxBoy promises to be a thousand times swifter than traditional manual methods.
In-Development
With growing interest and support, I am committed to enhancing features and expanding the parts library over time. The current sale price will reflect the work put in, and of course early adopters will always benefit from continuous access to updates and new resources.
Goals:
- Launch with 25 available parts, each featuring various sub-options.
- Introduce additional asset packs for purchase and download.
Implement Saving and Loading character features.- Introduce new slots for parts including weapons and shields for both hands.
- Enrich animation variety, adding idle, melee and ranged weapon attacks, hurt, death, jumping, climbing ladders, and possibly more.
- Develop an interface for customizing exported spritesheets according to user needs.
